This is Suze, back again with more from our series Quotes Ideas — where we share user cases about how you can enjoy and incorporate the Quotes app into your life. As a stationery enthusiast (yes, I caught this particular disease from Conan years ago), I find it super helpful and inspiring to see how the same tool can be shaped and customized by its users, just as an EDC notebook can be made entirely one’s own. We hope these posts spark new ideas and help you get even more from Quotes.

Commonplace books have been kept since antiquity. They are personal notebooks used to compile any information the owner finds interesting or useful, and can variously contain notes, proverbs, aphorisms, maxims, recipes, quotes, letters, poems, and professional references.

Entries are most often organized under systematic subject headings and differ functionally from journals or diaries, which are chronological and introspective.

My Commonplace Book Journey

To me, there is something irreplaceable about the feel and texture of paper. I keep a daily journal to record and commemorate my life, and also have a physical planner to organize my work and life. So of course, I was drawn to the commonplace book practice, and had to try it for myself.

I started with a thick notebook, as most people do, without realizing I wouldn’t actually have my commonplace book with me all the time. Most days, I only carry my mini 5 ring binder/wallet, so quite often I had to jot things down or type them into my phone first, then transfer everything into my commonplace book in the evening before bed. Things were going okay; I didn’t mind the extra step too much, as I journal a little bit daily anyway.

Next, I realized that even with my entries categorized, I still wanted to rearrange things frequently. So I switched to a ring binder system and taped my entries with washi tape so I could reposition them without much hassle. Problem solved. Not pretty, but it worked!

The paper system had been working great, until I hit one wall I couldn’t get around — searchability. No matter how modularized my paper system was, I had to admit it: when I wanted to find a specific entry, it still took quite a bit of flipping. It worked well for professional references since everything is easy to sort and locate. Sadly, when it came to quotes, I found that more often than not, I only vaguely remembered part of a phrase or a few words inside a quote, not the author, the source, the genre or the colorful index tag that had been assigned to it. Without a doubt, I had quite a lot of painful moments where the ONE quote I was looking for was just nowhere to be found.

I had to try something new to solve this pain and keep my commonplace book dream alive. After racking my brain and trying to tweak my binder system with no luck, I turned to a hybrid solution and started using the Quotes app to bridge my analog and digital worlds (yes, this was how I became a Quotes user in the first place). For professional references, I still keep them inside my physical commonplace book, since they’re easily sorted and I only need that kind of information on specific occasions. For reading quotes and notes, proverbs, aphorisms, maxims, poems, lyrics, and lines from movies, I keep them in the Quotes app.

The workflow is simple: I use the OCR scanner, dictation function on my phone, or plain old copy-and-paste. If I have any additional thoughts and related notes, I can add them right then too, alongside the Quotes entry. Conveniently — or perhaps inevitably — I carry my phone with me almost all the time, saving me the extra transfer I used to do with my thick physical notebook. Categorizing and tagging are very easy and flexible with the app, which makes reorganizing a breeze. Most importantly, the search feature completely solves the pain of retrieval. As a bonus — I can simply type in a phrase or a word, and Quotes will find me that ONE quote along with other potentially related quotes and notes that contain the same subject. This is such a refreshing and powerful experience that I never get tired of.

That’s my (slightly long-winded) commonplace book journey up to this point. For now, I think I’ve found my peace with this current hybrid commonplace book system. I hope this kind of sharing can be helpful to some of you. If you’ve found a contented way to have a purely physical commonplace book system, I’m truly happy for you and would love to know how you made it work! Happy New Year!

As we step into a new year, I’ve been thinking about where Quotes should grow next.

While keeping it modern and simple in its UI and UX, we also want it to be flexible and powerful enough for power users to weave into their own workflows. To get there, programmability and automation are essential. That’s why, in the next chapter of development, we’re starting to steadily build out this area.

I originally planned to ship deep links in this release. But during the research phase, it became clear that, compared to deep links, Apple’s ecosystem now strongly favors Shortcuts for automation. There are two main reasons. First, Shortcuts uses GUI-based programming, which is far more approachable. Second, it offers stronger data-protection mechanisms. With deep-link approaches, users often need to generate and manage API keys to access app data. With Shortcuts, that step simply disappears—one less thing to worry about.

When we talk about programmability, we’re really talking about composability. A composable system uses a small set of building blocks to create a wide range of solutions. So in this update, we didn’t ship a single “complete” feature. Instead, we added a collection of building blocks. Think of them as vocabulary: you can combine them to form the sentences you need.

Two months ago, a user posted on our feedback forum asking for OCR support, so they could import text from quote images into Quotes. Before this release, you might have had to wait for the Quotes dev team to implement it. With this release, the tools are in your hands, shaped by your own ideas!

By connecting Quotes’ “Distraction-Free Capture” with Apple’s system-level OCR, like what I did in the above screenshot, you can create an image-to-text quote collector tailored exactly to your own workflow.

If you have a specific workflow in mind, give the Quotes shortcuts a try! I’ve prepared a document with a detailed “vocabulary list” of the available building blocks. As a Quotes user myself, I’d like to start the series by sharing one of my favorite ways to use Quotes: Home screen widgets as affirmation cards.

Feel free to skip ahead, but here’s a tiny bit of techy moment for those not familiar with the idea of affirmation cards and/or interested in knowing more.

Affirmation cards are decks of cards that each feature a positive statement, encouraging phrase, or empowering mantra. While simple, they are rooted in psychological principles like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections). By consistently repeating positive statements, you can interrupt negative self-talk, strengthen new positive neural pathways, lower cortisol (stress hormone) levels, and increase resilience when facing challenges by activating the brain’s reward centers.

Affirmation cards are a simple, yet powerful tool for managing my mental health and practicing positive mindset. As a busy entrepreneur and professional, words of affirmation help me stay grounded and focused.

Here’s my affirmation ritual:

Before working or when I’m feeling stuck, I “draw” a card by shuffling my Quotes widget. I set up the widget to shuffle from a dedicated Collection in my Quotes library called “💪Pump Up!“. These are all the inspiring words I’ve curated to help me stay focused and energized during the day, so I can count on every shuffle to give me the boost I need to keep going.

At night, when I need to relax and wind down from work, I “draw” a card to remind myself that rest is productive too — and that I don’t need to feel guilty about not finishing every goal on my list. Many of these quotes come from my “Life Wisdom” collection, along with a few others, so I set this widget to shuffle from a Tag instead of a single Collection. (Yes, you can add multiple widgets as you like!) Guilt and overthinking add up, so this small ritual is essential to me to help quiet the noise and protect my energy.

These affirmation quotes come from everywhere — readings (books or online articles), conversations with people, Instagram posts from the artists I follow, and random signs in real life. Thanks to the easy and effective organization feature in Quotes and integration with Apple devices, it is very simple to set up the widgets according to your specific needs and lifestyles.

CSV Import

At Quotes, we’ve always aimed to support the diverse workflows of our users. Many of you already had your own systems for managing quotes before discovering Quotes, and we’ve heard your requests loud and clear—how can you bring your existing library into our app?

After introducing Kindle importing in our last update, we’re now adding CSV importing!

CSV is a universal file format supported by many tools. However, every software uses its own data structure and column names, making importing tricky. Traditionally, users either have to manually modify their CSV files to match the software’s specifications, or developers need to add specific support for every variation.

We believe we can make this process smoother.

With CSV Import, we’ve introduced a mapping tool that lets you drag and drop to match CSV fields to Quotes’ data structure. No coding, no headaches—just a few simple clicks to get your data where it needs to be.

For even faster importing, Quotes will automatically detect and apply mappings for known CSV formats. For example, we’ve added support for Readwise CSVs, and more formats are coming soon. Let us know which tools you’d like us to support next!

If your current tool doesn’t support CSV exports, don’t worry—we offer free data conversion tools and services for all licensed users of Quotes. Just reach out to us, and we’ll help you migrate your data effortlessly!

Keyboard Navigation

For power users who love keyboard shortcuts, Quotes just got even better. While most commands already had shortcuts, navigating the app wasn’t as fluid—until now.

With keyboard navigation, you can use Cmd + [ and Cmd + ] to move focus between different areas of the app. From there, use the arrow keys and Enter to select items.

Expanded Metadata

We’ve added a Public ID field to capture identifiers like ISBN, DOI, or ASIN for your sources. Don’t have a URL for your source? No problem! If you provide a valid ISBN-10 or ASIN, Quotes will automatically generate a link to the book’s Amazon page—handy for exploring related books or additional details.

Additionally, we’ve expanded source types and formats, now including options like audiobooks and paper formats.

More Flexible Pricing Options

When we talked to our users, we found that many appreciate a pricing option that’s more budget-friendly and flexible. They also value the reassurance that a subscription model offers—ensuring developers stick around to improve the app over time. We hear you!

With both yearly and monthly plans, Quotes is now more accessible than ever, while helping us keep bringing you the features and improvements you love for years to come. Now, you have the flexibility to choose what works best for you.

It’s been a while since our last update, but we wanted to take our time with this one, bringing you a richer experience in Quotes. This release packs in quite a bit, but it all centers around a single focus—Importing from Kindle.

Importing from Kindle

Importing Kindle Highlights is easy: connect your Kindle to your Mac, follow the steps in the Quotes Import guide, and you’re all set. Here’s a quick video walkthrough:

The whole process takes just a few clicks, every entry is automatically sorted by authors and book names, complete with your notes. All this happens seamlessly. And you can keep using Quotes while it runs. Once it’s done, you’ll find everything in the Inbox—a staging area where you can decide which highlights make it into your main library. The Inbox is a great way to filter through your highlights and only keep the ones that mean the most. If you want a refresher on the Inbox, we covered it in the previous newsletter!

Quotes ❤️ Notes

Quotes can inspire us, but notes make them feel like they’re truly ours. We’re excited to introduce the new Notes feature, where you can add your own reflections to any quote. With a quick slash command, you can type in a note without even touching the mouse. Here’s a quick look:

Of course, notes can sometimes get in the way visually, so we added a toggle in the toolbar to show or hide them whenever you like.

Explore with the Index Column

With Kindle import, we know many of you will have a larger library, and we wanted to make navigation as smooth as possible. When working with large libraries, it’s helpful to browse by authors and books. Last time, we introduced the Authors page, but we thought it deserved a more prominent spot. Now, it’s a global feature—the Index Column.

With the Index Column, you can:

• Browse the available authors and works in any page.

• Instantly see quotes related to a specific author or book with a click.

• Use batch actions like renaming or deleting an author or book, especially handy for large collections.

On pages like the Inbox and Recycle Bin, the toolbar buttons adjust to match your selection—if you select an author and hit Batch Delete, all their quotes will be removed in one go.

Improvements coming from user feedbacks

Hide Quotes Icon in the Dock

Like many of you, we like to keep Quotes running in the background, ready to capture insights whenever inspiration hits. With the new option in Settings, you can now hide the dock icon, save some room for our workspace.

Easier “By-Whom” Lines

This one’s for the detail lovers: typing `--` (two dashes) at the beginning of a line creates a by-whom line for citing the source. We’ve made it even simpler by adding a slash command that fills in the template. Plus, pressing Tab lets you move between author and title fields quickly. Here’s how it looks:

We’re excited to share some fantastic new features in this update, taking Quotes to the next level as your go-to tool for capturing and managing quotes. Here’s what’s new:

Quick Capture & Inbox

In Quotes 1.0, the app was a simple tool for generating quote images. But Quotes has evolved! Now, we’ve made it easier and faster to save quotes while you’re reading, without interrupting your flow. Meet Quick Capture.

Using Quick Capture is easy: just copy the text you want to save, then activate Quick Capture. You can do this from the Menu Bar, or even better, use the shortcut (Cmd + Option + '). Once triggered, Quotes will automatically grab the text from your clipboard and drop it into your Inbox.

What’s the Inbox? It’s a temporary home for your quotes, giving you a chance to review them before adding them to your Library. Not every quote makes the cut, and that’s okay! Instead of worrying about it while you’re reading, quickly send it to the Inbox and review it later with a fresh perspective.

Authors Filter List

As your quote collection grows, finding exactly what you’re looking for can become tricky. That’s where the Authors Filter List comes in. Want to know how many Marcus Aurelius quotes you’ve saved? Or quickly add a quote from one of his books without manually entering all the details? We’ve got you covered.

This feature is super intuitive. You can browse your authors, see a list of their works, and instantly access all their quotes. Click an author to view their quotes in the detail view or drill down to see quotes from a specific book.

Plus, when combined with the stats view in the bottom-left corner of the Library window, you can quickly see relevant statistics about an author or a specific book.

Another context-aware feature is the plus button above the quote cards. You can also trigger this with a global shortcut (Cmd + Shift + Option + '). When you’re adding a quote under a selected author or book, the relevant metadata will automatically be added, saving you from having to input it manually.

Human-Friendlier Export Formats

In a previous update, we introduced the ability to export your Library data, primarily as a backup in machine-readable formats. However, many times we need to export data in a format that’s more human-friendly. That’s why in this update, we’ve added support for exporting in Markdown, HTML, and RTF formats. You can access this feature the same way as before, via the File > Export Library… menu.

Global vs Local Editing

One great feature of Quotes is that it automatically links quotes with the same source. So, when you update the source metadata for one quote, any other quotes with the same source get updated, too. But what if you want to make changes to just one quote?

For example, if you’re adding another book in a series but don’t want to manually re-enter the same details, just use auto-complete to copy over the info from the previous book. Then, toggle off Global Editing and tweak the details for the new book—quick and easy!

More Customization Options

We know that one size doesn’t fit all. That’s why we’ve introduced more customization options for your Library.

When your collection is small, a simple Authors list works great. But as it grows, you might want more powerful tools to help manage it. We’ve added an auto mode that activates these advanced features only when you need them, keeping things streamlined until then.

And if the Inbox doesn’t fit into your workflow, don’t worry! You can easily bypass it using the Skip Inbox for Quick Capture setting.

We've created a simple, unobtrusive widget that fits perfectly on your desktop. It's there when you need it, but never in the way.

2. Cherry-Pick Your Inspiration

Tailor your inspiration by customizing widget quotes from specific collections or tags. Your widget, your choice!

3. Automatic Reshuffle

Start your work right with fresh inspiration. The widget automatically refreshes with a new quote twice daily: before your work starts and after your lunch break. (8 a.m. and 2 p.m.)

4. Quick Refresh

Not feeling the current quote? No problem! With the one-click refresh button, you can quickly find the perfect quote to match your mood.

5. Seamless Integration

Want to dive deeper into a quote? Simply click on the widget, and the Quotes app will open, navigating directly to the specific quote. It's the perfect bridge between your desktop inspiration and your full quote library.

We believe that the quotes you cherish deserve to be preserved. Often, we want to revisit the ones that truly resonate with us. That's exactly what we've been working on for the past month. The quotes you've entered into the Quotes app will now be saved, ensuring they are never fleeting!

We are thrilled to announce the first major release since 1.0.0—the Quotes Library update (2.0.0).

This update is packed with exciting new features. Here are some highlights:

Flexible Ways to Save and Edit Your Quotes

When you enter quotes in the Quotes Editor window, they will now be saved automatically when you close the window. (For those who love using CMD+S, don’t worry—we've got you covered too.) Your new quotes will appear in the Library window. To edit a quote, simply double-click on it to reopen it in the Editor, or click the selected quote again to enter in-place editing mode.

As your library expands, batch editing becomes essential. Enter Power Mode, accessible via the lightning symbol in the toolbar menu. In Power Mode, all quote cards are in editing mode, making modifications a breeze, including deleting and restoring quotes too. Explore these features at your convenience.

Organize with Collections and Tags

Search bar is useful to find specific keywords, but more complex writing projects or long-term organization require additional tools. That's why we've introduced Collections and Tags. These tools help you to group related quotes together. It’s great for re-surfacing relevant ideas.

Collections are like boxes for index cards. You can create an infinite number of these virtual boxes to suit your needs, whether for categorizing quotes or organizing projects. Unlike physical boxes, a single quote card can be placed in multiple collections. The Following clip shows 2 ways to create a collection and how to set categories for your quotes.

Tags offer another dimension to organize and re-surfacing relevant quotes. Just add a hash symbol in front of any word to turn it into a hashtag, similar to social networks.

Preserve the Context with Metadata

In the library, use the inspector panel on the right to manage the metadata of your selected quote. While it’s not necessary to fill in every detail, adding enough metadata will help your future self when revisiting quotes and finding their original context.

Manually entering details can be tedious. To simplify this, we’ve repurposed citation lines from apps like Kindle and Apple Books. When you paste a quote from these apps, the Editor will automatically extract the metadata and format the quote source line neatly.

For the first time, citation text from Kindle and Apple Books will be a help, not a hindrance!

Local-First and iCloud-Synced

The Quotes Library prioritizes local data storage, keeping your data saved on your device without needing an internet connection. This not only helps to protect your privacy, it also ensures a distraction-free writing environment.

However, if you want to access your library on another Mac, iCloud syncing makes it seamless. As long as you’re logged in with the same Apple ID, your quotes will sync automatically in the background.

These are just some of the highlights of the Quotes Library release. We encourage you to explore it at your convenience.

There are still many features we couldn't include in this version, and it's far from perfect. But we are committed to releasing updates as soon as possible to collect feedback from you. That’s the only way we can build something people truly want.

We're thrilled to announce the latest update to our Quotes app, version 1.4.0! This minor release brings some exciting changes and improvements to make your quote-creation experience even more enjoyable.

Aspect Ratio Control

We understand that square shape may not work in every circumstance. One of the most notable features in this release is the ability to easily adjust the aspect ratio of your quote images. You can now find these settings in both the app's preferences (for default settings) and the preview inspector sidebar (for on-the-fly adjustments).

Accurate Text Layout

To make this new feature possible, we've worked behind the scenes to resolve some bugs in the Apple SDK. As a result, you can expect more accurate text layout and rendering in your quotes.

Other Improvements & Bug Fixes

We're committed to continually improving our app based on your feedback. In addition to the aspect ratio control, this release includes various bug fixes and enhancements, such as — You can now opt out of the self-adaptive design for the textbox.

• Background Padding Adjustment: Adjust the padding between your background image and the quote textbox for a better-looking vibe.

New Background option - Just Color

In addition to the existing options of random gradients, transparent backgrounds, and customized pictures, you can now pick any color you like as the background for your quote images. This gives you even more creative freedom to express your style and mood.

Inspector sidebar - Closer Customization

I've introduced a brand-new inspector sidebar that allows you to personalize your quote images right next to the canvas. This makes the customization process smoother and more intuitive. It's worth noting that the customization options in the app settings are now for setting your default preferences. You can save your favorite configurations as the default, then easily tweak them on a case-by-case basis using the sidebar.

Under the Hood Improvements - Steady Win

While the new features mentioned above are the main highlights, I've also been working hard on various small experience improvements and bug fixes. These changes may not be immediately noticeable, but you'll likely feel the app running faster and smoother.

Additionally, I've invested significant time and effort into enhancing the text engine. This not only ensures performance and future-proofing, but also lays the groundwork for some exciting upcoming features.

2. Revamped WYSIWYG Experience: The previewer and image-rendering engine have undergone a complete overhaul for a more powerful and flexible operation. This update promises a seamless editing-to-preview transition, delivering on my WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) promise.

3. Expanded Background Customizations: Continuing the commitment to personalization, this update brings you more ways to express your unique style. Beyond the curated gradients, you now have the option for a minimalistic transparent background or the freedom to showcase your personality with your own images. 4. Introducing PRO features: As a token of appreciation for our early adopters, all PRO features are accessible for free currently, making the purchase optional. My journey to this moment is deeply rooted in a shared passion for reading and the desire to share the wisdom I find in the words I read.

The Inspiration Behind Quotes:
As a bookworm myself, I've always cherished the ability to share quotes from my readings. While platforms like Kindle offer the option to share quote images from books they are selling, I found myself limited when it came to other texts or documents. The need to highlight and share pieces from articles online or to emphasize parts of a non-Kindle book was a challenge, with no suitable tools available. Moreover, managing these quotes and highlights was another hurdle that needed a solution.

This is why I created Quotes. I envisioned an app that not only allows for the easy creation and sharing of quote images from any source but also offers a way to manage these pieces of wisdom efficiently. For the Version 1.0, I've honed in on the "sharability" aspect, making sure you can share your quotes easily, quickly, and in a visually appealing manner. But this is just the beginning. I're committed to expanding Quotes to meet all your quote handling needs.
